Costa Rica Travel Tips
We’re pleased that you’ve chosen to accompany us on one of the best kayak adventures in the world. Please read it carefully; call us if you have further questions.

Travel Insurance
Travel insurance is strongly suggested for all of our international kayaking trips. We have included a brochure for travel insurance through a company that we have found to be excellent. When traveling in remote places such as Costa Rica, this insurance is a sound investment.

Travel Documents and Currency
A passport and photo ID is required for entry and travel in Costa Rica. US currency is accepted for exchange into the local currency of colones that comes in bills of 50, 500, 1000, 5000 and 10,000. Coins come in 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 25, 50 and 100 colones. The exchange rate in early 2005 had one USD equal to 440 colones with this additional note that is good to keep in mind. If you are planning to come to Costa Rica, we strongly advise you NOT to bring US one-hundred-dollar bills. Central America has been inundated with false bills and you will find everyone, including the banks, unwilling to accept them. In fact, the banks are likely to confiscate them. Stick with smaller denomination bills, traveler's checks or credit cards. A further note about US bills in general--Be sure the bills you bring are in good condition. Small tears or missing pieces will render them useless in this country.

Health and Fitness
Our trip is one that any reasonably fit person can enjoy. If you have never paddled a canoe before, you should try it at a local outfitter or retailer. We will provide instruction appropriate to the skill levels represented in our group once we gather in Costa Rica. Each participant should be capable of paddling for approximately 6-8 hours each day with land breaks every hour or two. Please complete the personal medical form. There are no extra vaccinations suggested.

Weather
We’ll be in the Costa Rica for their summer. Around San Jose the temperatures should range from the 60s to high 80s F. Over all it is a Tropical climate. Hot and humid on Caribbean coast, cooler in central valley and hot and dry on Pacific coast
