India - Ganges Travel Tips
We’re pleased that you’ve chosen to accompany us on one of the best adventures in the world. Please read it carefully; call us if you have further questions.

Travel and Accommodations
We urge you to make your travel arrangements as early as possible in order to get the best fares. Please send us a copy of your airline itinerary when it is set, so we can help with arrangements for picking you up at the airport. You will be met at the airport by our staff, escorted through customs, and transferred to your hotel.

Travel Insurance
Travel insurance is strongly suggested for all of our international kayaking trips. When traveling in remote places such as India, this insurance is a sound investment.

Travel Documents
A passport which is signed and valid for more than six months after our return from India for our stay is required. Please make sure that your passport is returned to you with plenty of time to spare before our trip’s departure. Plan for the process to take 3-4 weeks unless expedited at an extra cost.

Health and Fitness
Our trip is one that any reasonably fit person can enjoy. Please complete the enclosed personal medical form. No specific vaccinations are legally required to enter India. Please check with your local clinic and doctor for current inoculation requirements and other health recommendations. If you require inoculations that need updating, we recommend starting early for maximum comfort.

Weather
Temperatures will range from 65-90 degrees F.

Clothing needs are simple for our adventure.
Layering clothing is the most effective way to deal with varying temperatures and wind conditions throughout the day. And remember, if you are dressed appropriately, the weather is always perfect!

Further Notes

KAYAKING THE GANGES
India has a range of rivers ideal for multi day river touring. The Ganga, believed to be the 'holiest river in the world' and 'the life and soul of India', is by far the most popular. The cultural diversity en route, Hindu shrines and temples, the friendly & helpful people, the wildlife and avifauna and Gangetic dolphin sightings all add up to make this a very special trip.

River Ganga and Mythology:
Goddess Ganga was going to descend to earth in a raging torrent, the force of which would have crushed the globe. At this Lord Shiva decided to receive the power of Ganga's falling waters in his matted hair and released them as gentle streams all across the region of Uttarakhand. Arising amidst high Himalayan peaks, the Ganga’s source is called Gaumukh, the snout of the Gangotri glacier – the point at which Ganga is believed to have descended.

This is Hindu mythology to a visitor. But for devout Hindus, this is more than folklore. For them, the Ganga river is an integral part of their lives. The role of the river at the times of birth and death and its role as they live their lives with the inherent belief of these waters having the power to cleanse their sins make the river an important facet in a Hindu’s life. A tour down the mystic River Ganges introduces you to the age-old religion and traditions of Hinduism.

The River Tour:
The river, approximately 2525 kms long, starts from Devprayag and passes through five Indian states and flows into the Bay of Bengal at Calcutta. The entire journey --which crosses the states of Uttaranchal, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal-- can be completed in 60 to 80 days. The main towns and settlements en route include Rishikesh, Haridwar, Brijghat (Garhmukteshwar), Anupshahr, Nagaura, Fatehgarh, Kanpur, Dalmau, Allahabad, Mizapur, Benaras, Ghazipur, Buxar, Patna, Mokameh, Monghir, Sultanganj, Khejuria (Farakka), Jiaganj, Murshidabad, Behrampore,Katwa, Nabapdwip, Kalna, Calcutta.
